During the April Priesthood session President Monson gave a talk titled Priesthood Power. During the talk he says "Many movies and television shows portray behavior which is in direct opposition to the laws of God. Do not subject yourself to the innuendo and outright filth which are so often found there." When I brought this up with a group of friends, implying that I may not want to watch a certain show (because it tries to make things I don't agree with seem acceptable) one of my friends said "I don't like it when they" (meaning church leaders) "try and get so picky and tell us all the little things we are supposed to do or not."
Well. I disagree. Granted, it would be awesome if every individual listened to the promptings of the spirit so completely that we didn't need to be told, but that doesn't happen, heck I don't listen that closely! And I figure that anything the prophet tells me, maybe I should listen, not murmur. Don't get me wrong, this friend is amazing and in no way am I judging her for this one comment, but I am certainly judging the comment itself. After all, times change but God doesn't. The world is getting more and more wicked, and sin is becoming more and more acceptable. Why wouldn't I want counsel in order to navigate the nuances where I might otherwise be persuaded to unwittingly sin?
Sometimes the chaos of the world around us makes it difficult to hear the whisperings of the spirit. Why not embrace fully the counsel given us by inspired leaders? That is what I will attempt to do. And when I mess up, I will attempt again.
I agree! Julie beck talked about similar things about staying as far away from worldly stuff that leads away from heavenly father, so why not do what they say!
ReplyDeleteI need the guidance! My life is too loud to always hear what Heavenly Father is telling me!
