"When a student is so engrossed in her textbook that she forgets to eat lunch..." Really? Engrossed in a textbook? I do hope that day comes, but it certainly isn't here while I take biology solely because I have to. Maybe once I'm taking psychology and social work related courses, but not now.
Perhaps they are trying to enter our subconscious. Just put that in there thinking we'd gloss over it and then start thinking we are engrossed with this book.
I think that by 'engrossed' they actually mean 'falling asleep face first' in their textbook.
